Apple has actually done something to bring more competition (like, actually, without something one developer has called 'malicious compliance') to its services (in the EU only, of course), this time in Apple Pay, and now the EU is satisfied!!! The EU has now closed its Apple Pay investigation that had been going on for 4 years and could have resulted in a giant fine!!! Here's some more details.
For 4 years until yesterday, the EU had been conducting an Apple Pay investigation, specifically looking at how Apple restricted contactless payment to its proprietary Apple Pay service by denying NFC access for third-party apps to reduce competition (a child is taught that that is unfair!). Now, Apple (as part of some adjustments Apple announced in January but only now implemented) has finally opened the feature (used in lots of things, not just contactless payment) to third-parties (no malicious compliance fees)!!! Other changes Apple made are to make biometrics, the double-click trigger function, and the ability to be set as the default wallet available to other contactless payment apps. These features will still be here until July 11, 2034. Apple's compliance with the EU Apple Pay demands causing this announcement will be monitored and reviewed, and any disputes will be able to be resolved without much bother with "a fast dispute resolution mechanism".
